Although these are reasonably called sketches, it is clear
that they are not made in stone. The justification for this oxymoronic title
is a remark that I recall being attributed to Michelangelo, speaking, I
think, of his David. He said that he had only removed the stone that
was in the way, revealing the form that was already there in the marble when
he started. These sketches (other than the first few which are based on AP
and CNN news photographs) were made in similar fashion, although using a
very different material. Essentially random patterns generated by effects
filters are my "stone." I have just cut away the parts that obscured the
forms that I saw already there. These sketches might also be called "cloud
pictures," for the process is very like laying back on a hillside, studying
the passing clouds to see what images may appear.
